Max Lyle
Max Lyle (b. 1948) is an Australian sculptor known for his innovative use of materials and exploration of form. His artistic journey began with a visit to the National Gallery of Victoria and continued through his studies at the South Australian School of Art, where he was influenced by sculptor Lenton Parr. Parr's use of welded steel shaped Lyle's approach to blending organic and geometric forms. Early works, often made from welded steel and galvanized metal, depict hybrid creatures combining natural and industrial elements. Lyle later expanded into materials like cast polyester resin, stainless steel, and welded copper tubing. His 1990s Survivor series explored human resilience and the environment. Throughout his career, Lyle’s work remains rooted in the human experience, constantly reinventing materials and themes to express individual and collective narratives through dynamic, sculptural forms.
